Bursary Fund

Who can apply for a bursary?

Any citizen of South Africa, Swaziland or Zimbabwe who is studying a course related to agriculture at a recognised tertiary institution in South Africa can apply. Please note that students are only supported from their second year of study.

Which courses of study will be considered valid?

Any agricultural course is valid, as well as courses related to the agricultural industry such as logistics, entomology etc.

Which educational institutions are applicable?

All recognised Universities, Colleges or Universities of Technology are applicable. In the case of pure agricultural qualifications, the institution should preferably offer citrus production as a subject.

How do I apply for a bursary?

You can apply for a bursary by completing the online application form by following the relevant link on our homepage, or by visiting the "Bursary Fund" page. You can also download and print the form from the website, and then fax or post the completed form to us. Alternatively, you can contact the Citrus Academy office directly and request a form to be sent to you. All the contact details are available on our "Contact Us" page.

What are the criteria for a successful application?

Applications are rated according to the following criteria: 1) Previously disadvantaged status; 2) Appropriateness of field of study; 3) Academic performance; 4) Financial need; 5) Background relation to the citrus industry; 6) Gender (female candidates preferred); 7) Disability.

When is the closing date for bursary applications?

The closing date for applications is 30 September of the year preceding the proposed year of study.

I have applied for a bursary but haven't received any reply.

Successful candidates will be informed accordingly before the middle of December after the application was submitted. Please note that only successful candidates are notified, and therefore, if you have not received any notification, your application was unfortunately not successful.

What does the bursary cover?

The bursary can cover all study-related expenses, including tuition fees, on-campus accommodation, research costs, books and stationery.

What are the obligations and requirements of the bursary fund?

Bursary Fund students have to maintain a minimum D-average and may not fail any main subject outright. Undergraduate, certificate and diploma students have to perform a minimum of four weeks vacation work per year. All students are expected to work in the citrus industry on completion of their studies for a minimum period equal to the period for which they received support. Failure to adhere to the above will result in the student having to pay back the bursary money.

Learning Material

Where can I find citrus specific learning material?

The Citrus Academy has developed comprehensive, unit standard aligned learning material on all aspects of citrus production. The learning material was developed in such a way that it can be used for training purposes or simply as reference guides. The material ranges from NQF 2 (aimed at farm workers) to NQF 5 (aimed at managers).

What is the cost of the production learning material?

The learning material can be downloaded from the "Learning Material" page at no cost. High-quality printed learner guides can also be ordered from the Citrus Academy. The order form is also available on the "Learning Material" page.

What training courses do you offer?

The Citrus Academy is not a delivery mechanism for training and we do not offer any training courses as such. Accredited training service providers deliver specific training courses. The Citrus Academy has in the past held capacity building workshops that were aimed at learning facilitators, but they are now arranged only on special request.

Who are the training service providers in my area, and what courses do they offer?

On the "Service Provider" page you will find information on the accredited service providers that are active in every citrus production region and the services that they offer. On the "Training programs in you area" page you will find information about specific training programs in the citrus growing regions.

When is the next capacity building workshop?

Capacity building workshops are not being held on a regular basis any longer, but are still arranged on special request for specific target groups and provided that funding is available. Please contact us for more information.
